A solid flavored amber ale but a little bit of a flat body and semi-bitter aftertaste keeps this beer off my dance card.
Crazy Mountain Amber came in a sampler pack that was bought for me as a gift. I was not familiar with the Crazy Mountain Brewery but after doing some research, they have a good reputation and a nice history. Their reputation with community involvement is also cool. You can read about them at their link below. I do not personally care for this particular brew but I would not hesitate to try another of their offerings.
Crazy Mountain amber pours a deep honey brown. The aroma is fairly sweet with honey notes. The beer is a bit flat out of the can. I did try two different cans and that seems to be its characteristic. There is a nut flavor but this beer would not be characterized as particularly nutty. The malt characteristic is based on a roast you see in a lot of ambers; a kind of light char that brings out the nutty flavor. However, this one is a bit woody. The hops with the malt roast gives the beer an oak-like flavor that I did not particularly like. They claim to put "an obscene," amount of hops in the beer but my thought was, OK, but lets put the "right," amount of hops to make a delicious beer.
Crazy Mountain Amber opens with a bitterness on the back of the tongue and because there is no real body to the beer the flavor flows quickly there. A slight sweetness comes out but that back of the tongue woody flavor takes center stage. The middle is where the nut flows in and it is a very slight yet noticeable peanut flavor. But again because of the lack of body, that flavor flows away very quickly. The ending is a woody, fairly bitter hops flavor that I did not particularly like and that flavor lasts a long time on the back of the tongue.
The beer looks good and smells good but the bitter finish makes me not interested in trying it again. I will try some of Crazy Mountain's other brews but this one did not fit my tastes and I am glad it came in a sampler so I don't have to drink 6 of them
