I love the chili adjunct. I am a big fan of pepper beers. I have had several in the past couple months that were awesome. This is one of favorites of this small but growing genre.
I went to Alaskan Brewing in Juneau...bet I am one up on you there. :) It is a cute little place that has since been expanded. The people in Juneau could not be any nicer and the brewery could not be any more quaint. But let's be honest, Alaska Brewing is big time Craft and brews some really good beer. In my opinion, this is their best beer and it is kind of funny. A jalapeno beer from Alaska...well, you kind of get the irony.
Of all the chilis popular in the US, I think the jalapeno ranks near the bottom. It is the most popular but it does not have the flavor of a habanero or ancho. It's thick skin makes it great for nachos but it is not an overly flavorful in its basic state and if you asked me what chili I would flavor a beer with, jalapeno won't be in the top 5. The few times I have brewed beer with chilis I have used habaneros. But, Alaskan Brewing milks every bit of flavor out of a jalepeno and does not try and fool you with heat. The beer has very little spice. But they do a great job pulling every little bit of flavor out of that over-rated, thick skinned little pepper.
Alaskan Jalapeno is a light golden color with hints of red. The head is full and near white. The beer smells of chilis and light hops. It has a green pepper smell more than anything else. The mouthfeel is thin. The flavor is clean and light with a nice hop presence and a distince chili flavor. The flavor is more reminiscent of a green pepper but I detect the jalapeno. Regardless, the chili flavor is there and it is really nice. There is no real heat. That is a little different than most chili beers floating around right now. Alaskan is shooting to exploit the flavor of the chili and not the heat and they are successful in doing so.
If you can find this beer on draft, jump all over it. It is not a suoer rare beer but it is not easy to find either. I really like it. The first time I had it I e-mailed the local Alskan rep to find out where I could get it. She got back to me and there was one liquor store in SE Wisconsin that had any left. I had a buddy run over and buy it for me.
Then this year it comes out and the ding-a-ling at the big beer store (big does not mean good) tells me that I was the only guy who would buy it. He is a dumb ass and the record shows it. The kegs of this beer sell out at bars very quickly. The reason is because it is smooth, drinkable, delicious, and interesting. The chili is a pronounced accent to a good underlying beer concoction. And once again, Alaskan Brewery has produced a good quality, drinkable beer that offends no-one, excites some, and makes me call my rep to find it. Good beer..
